Declutter a Bedroom: 3 Honest Truths

How long is a piece of string, my Dad would ask! I don’t know…

If you want to declutter a bedroom, read this first and decide if you can DIY it or hire some help.

It’s a popular question. Usually asked by someone standing in the doorway looking defeated before we’ve even started. While I don’t actually know the answer until I have done it, probably less time than you think, but almost certainly longer than you’re hoping.

If it was a 20 minute job, you probably would have done it yourself. So it’s likely a biggie. And the difference between those two things usually has nothing to do with how much stuff you’ve got. Though that does matter.

If you’re someone who’s been putting off tackling your bedroom because it feels like a three-day project you’ll never have the energy for, this one’s for you.

Whether it’s a wardrobe door that won’t close, or something that currently resembles a dumping ground – the process is the same, and the timeline is more manageable than it looks from the outside.

Three hours on one cupboard vs entire room

I have spent 3 hours in a bedroom just getting into a cupboard. It was a huge job, and that was her request.

“I just want to be able to get into the cupboard”.

We smashed it, but on top of that I also did a charity shop drop AND a tip run. So really it was more like 4.5 hours with all the traffic.

I have also helped a mum declutter a bedroom. It was her 3 year olds so it was pretty simple but kids do acquire a lot of stuff.

I emptied all the drawers, created a charity shop bag and then folded things nicely and put back.

Hoovered and polished, made the bed and took all the bags with me to the local charity shop.

Decision Making Fatigue

The first hour tends to be pretty plain sailing. You’re feeling good, you’re putting things in piles, deciding easily which needs to stay or go.

Then, as time passes it gets harder and harder and quite frankly more boring.

This is why when you’re alone trying to declutter a bedroom you can start to struggle, then start wandering off, finding more interesting things to do. ADHD anyone?

When I am with you, or doing it for you there is no chance of skipping off. I will make sure we get the job done.

And I totally understand the boredom after a few hours. So having multiple sessions over a month can also help.

"Chuck It In The Bin"

My favourite phrase!

I don’t mean actually bin in, there are different piles to go into.

But I promise, you do not need those size 12 jeans when you’ve been a size 16 for the past 8 years. And dieting makes you go cranky.

They are just clogging up your wardrobe and making yourself feel shit every time you swipe past them.

If it doesn’t work/fit/suit you now and there are no plans in the next 12-18 months of that changing then get rid of it.

Unless it’s an antique and worth £20k… then you can keep it!

TL;DR - So, how long to declutter a bedroom?

Honestly, anywhere from three hours to a full day.

Depending on, the room, the stuff, and how many times we nearly get distracted by the sock drawer.

What I can tell you is that it always takes less time with two of us than it does with one of you, a cup of tea, and a wandering brain.

If your bedroom has been on the list for longer than six months, it’s time. Get in touch and we’ll figure out the rest.
